Hanover County is the largest county in Metro Richmond (by land area) but is it’s least populous when compared to Henrico and Chesterfield. It is the only one of the ‘Big Three’ counties which does not share a border with the City of Richmond. It forms the northern border with Henrico along the I295 corridor and is bisected by I95. Hanover County is popular for its more rural aesthetic than its more developed neighbors, especially in its western sections.
Ashland, Mechanicsville, Atlee, Beaverdam, Elmont and Old Church are some of the common area names in Hanover County. Much of western Hanover is accessed via Route 33 (Staples Mill Road) or Route 54. Much of the eastern sections are accessed via Route 301 (Chamberlayne Road) or Route 360 (Mechanicsville Turnpike.) Much of eastern Hanover is convenient to the creek and river-filled areas along the Chesapeake Bay in the ‘Northern Neck’ or ‘Middle Peninsula.’
Hanover County is popular for its slightly lower residential homes prices, access to interstate, lower taxes and slower pace of life. The Town of Ashland is popular in that it offers some semblance of the urban experience (walking to shops, restaurants, services, Amtrack station) without many of the issues found in larger urban areas.
